Who we are
David Clayton and Tim Young came up with the idea of providing a tracking service for horses about three years ago and, once we had more than just a paper idea, we formed Radal Ltd two years ago. Radal stands for:
We are the only employees and, having both been senior managers in large British corporations, we intend to keep it that way. Our backgrounds are similar in that we are Purchasing Directors, albeit from different industries. We are well positioned then to outsource and subcontract our requirements to other companies and then put it all together as a complete service offering, which is what we have done. The thing that pleases us most, is that we are able to offer a British product supported by British based support services, particularly when the trend is to manufacture and support overseas.
A bit more about David Clayton
I was brought up with horses from an early age and first fell off a horse at 3 years old. This did not daunt me and I currently have 8 polo ponies, 6 of which are still actively involved in playing each year, and two who are now retired. It is one of these, Henry who is 34 years old, whom we are using for our own in-house testing of the product.
Whilst motoring around the countryside, I am always worried at the risk when I see horses in fields. This always brings back a very bitter experience when some 13 years ago in the middle of the night, I had the gates from the field where Henry & other horses were grazing stolen, leaving the horses open access to a main road. The inevitable happened - 2 horses had to be destroyed and Henry, although hit by a car, brought his soul mates back. With Henry’s off hind leg in plaster for 4 months he was back on the Polo field the following season thanks to a lot of TLC and marvellous vets. In teaming up with Tim who has the technical knowhow, I now have the solution to my worry in a practical commercial venture.
A bit more about Tim Young
Tim’s first real encounter with a horse was when he met David. What Tim brings to the partnership is a number of years working in the IT and telecoms industries.
For the past 8 years I have been running my own purchasing consultancy working for Virgin Mobile, Accenture and Surrey County Council, and a number of other companies. Working for yourself is difficult as you have to rely on the goodwill of your clients to find new opportunities. I know therefore how important it is to ensure that you give value for money and good service, or the work dries up. I have and will continue to ensure that I adopt this philosophy in the services that we are offering through Radal.
So if my purchasing consultancy is so successful, why change? I believe that what David and I have found is a niche in the tracking market that needs to be filled. I believe that we are well placed to do this, David with his knowledge of horses and my technical background. I have now given up my consultancy work to concentrate on getting the services launched. It is both an exciting and daunting challenge.
