The Technology
The technology is similar to that used for tracking vehicles – but the challenges faced in using the technology with animals include:
- You cannot screw the tracking unit on to an animal.
- You cannot put a vehicle battery on to the back of an animal.
- Vehicles don’t roll (by choice!)or bite.
- The tracking unit is housed inside a weatherproof vehicle.
We have overcome these challenges. The tracking unit and battery is a single device that fits into a pouch that can be easily attached to the animal or the equipment. The size and weight of the tracking unit and battery are similar to those of a modern mobile phone. The design of the tracking unit takes into account that animals like to roll, they like to bite and they spend a significant part of their lives outside in all weathers.
The tracking unit houses the Global Positioning (GPS) module and the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) module. The GPS module calculates the position of your animal or equipment based upon information it receives from the GPS satellites, compares it to the monitoring zone that you will have entered via your web site and then passes the location to the GPRS module, which in turn transmits it over the mobile network to the computer system. The computer system then confirms the location and compares it with the coordinates of the monitoring zone.
